“Conservative” does not (and should not) be defined so narrowly as simply “anti-Liberal” or “opposition”. Now, this is not because we aren't sometimes relegated to the lowly post of “the opposition”. And it's certainly not because we're never “anti-Liberal“. It's because we are defined by what we believe, how we view the world, and how we conduct ourselves in the practical matters of real life, rather than by the views of others (or a mindless contrast to those views).
True Conservatives do not set their perspectives by checking the positions of those who call themselves “liberal”, or “Democratic”, or even “progressive”, and then choosing an opposing view. True Conservatives subscribe to time honored perspectives that can be defended with evidence and reason.
But if evidence and reason govern our thinking and our views, should they not also govern our discourse?
Welcome to a new kind of ideological playspace!
Here, we will discuss common conservative views with respect and discipline. We don't fight with “liberals” to prove they are foolish or undeserving, though we certainly don't object to demonstrating the errors and missteps in their committments. We converse with them to find common ground and cooperative solutions to real issues.
And where evidence and reason are truly and faithfully demonstrated, the righteousness of our well supported arguments will often show our “liberal” friends and lancemen may be less “liberal” than even they themselves have been led to believe.
